Ervie Charles Alford Melton

June 23, 1940 — April 15, 2023

Ervie Charles Alford Melton was born on June 23,1940 to Hazel and Archie Melton. He was known by some as Ervie others called him Charles. Charles served in the United States Air Force during 1956-1960. He was stationed in Greenland where he served as a court reporter. In 1961 Charles married Patricia Sue Smith and they had three children, Jackie Melton Griswold, Barbie Melton Cokkinias, and Chuck Melton. Lovingly called Pa or Papaw by his four grandchildren, he taught them all to drive, love nature, and whistle a tune. Most importantly he set an example as a man who loved God, country, and family. Before the later stages of dementia set in, he was able to meet his great granddaughter and her new foster sister. Their visits during his sickness brought him great joy. Charles was a member of Dorton Methodist Church. Charles became bedridden with Lewy Body Dementia in March of 2020 just as Covid was beginning. Sue, with the help of many loving family members, has dedicated the past three years to his care. In 2022 he was enrolled in Hospice. The Cumberland County Hospice workers associated with Cumberland House have been beyond wonderful in their love and selfless care. Charles flew to Heaven to reunite with family who preceded him: mother, Hazel Melton Swallows, father, Archie Melton, and his only son, Charles Wayne (Chuck) Melton, sister-in-law, Helen Melton, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who Rejoice in Heaven. Charles will be waiting for his beloved brother, Donald R. Melton, his beautiful bride, Sue, his daughters, Jackie Melton Griswold, Barbie and son-in-law Tim Cokkinias, grandchildren, Justin R. Griswold and wife Ashleigh, Jessica Clark and husband Trey, Tessa Cokkinias, and Tiffany Cokkinias, and great grandchild, Annagrace Sue Clark. Thank you to Sharon Parker and Roger Smith, who sacrificed so much of their time to helping care for their brother-in-law. To his nephews serving as pallbearers, thank you for the hunting, fishing, and storytelling that helped him carry on after he lost Chuck. It made his life fuller and he loved you all so much. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Bilbrey Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Turner Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Cumberland County Hospice and Cumberland House.
