Anne Looney Cook

April 24, 1939 — December 23, 2022

Anne Evans Looney Cook, 83, died Friday, December 23, 2022 in Chattanooga, TN. She is survived by brothers Jack L. Looney and Thomas E. Looney (Ann Kennedy) of Crossville; sons Christopher C. Cook (Wendy Keith) of Efland, NC, and William Wade Cook (Annemarie Molloy) of Rochester, NY; grandchildren William P. Cook, Audrey C. Cook, Brendan C. Cook (Margaret Swanson), and Kirby S. Cook (Randa Boykin); and nephews, nieces, and extended family. Anne is predeceased by parents C. Evans and Ruth L. Looney, daughter Mary Louisa Cook, and husband Norvel H. Cook, whom she married in 1960 and who died in 1990. Anne earned her BS, MS, and PhD at the Univ of TN - Knoxville in Home Economics, and was a sister of Delta Delta Delta. She worked as a certified nutritionist during school, then taught at the Univ of TN - Martin, retiring as the chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Anne was born in Oneida, TN but spent most of her childhood in Crossville. Her professional and family-rearing years were spent in Knoxville, Hickory, NC, and Martin. She returned to Crossville for her retirement. She also participated in wider professional organizations, including one term of service as president of the Tennessee Home Economics Association. Anne dabbled in several hobbies and causes. She was an expert seamstress and cook, and an amateur writer, finding pleasure in all her creations. She supported with time and money causes such as the Apple Festival at Homestead Tower, developing women's professional lives, and many facets of her church home. In retirement she remained active in her field of study, continuing with interest in research journals, conferences, and maintaining relationships with former colleagues. She also enjoyed new adventures such as travel to Australia, a European river cruise, and walking the road to Emmaus. She loved and was proud of her sons and their wives and cherished participating in the lives of her grandchildren. She genuinely loved her nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at Crossville First United Methodist Church. Interment of ashes will occur at a later date at East Side Cemetery in Martin, TN. While Anne had many interests, memorials are encouraged to: Homestead Tower Association in Crossville; Art Circle Public Library; Crossville First United Methodist Church; Erlanger Health System Foundation; or the Spina Bifida Association of America.
